Egress System

Our Egress System features stainless steel hinge and fasteners for durability and performance.

Selecting the desired window type/style for your home should be completely your decision. However, the egress building codes (a safety fire escape/rescue requirement) can be a factor in limiting your selection.

The egress code states that bedrooms require a minimum size window opening of 5.7 sq.ft. for emergency egress, limiting your window selection to one large unit.

The Coastal Egress System is actually a window frame, not a window itself. Smaller window units can be placed into the Coastal Egress Frame enabling smaller units to swing open for egress as one large unit.

Coastal Windows is the only vinyl window company that has an egress system, which virtually makes all our windows egress compliant, giving homeowners back their freedom of choice in selecting windows for the home.

The 1994 Uniform Building Code states in Chapter 3, Section 310.4 that:

Every sleeping room below the fourth story shall have at least one operable window or exterior door approved for emergency egress or rescue. The units shall be operable from the inside to provide a full clear opening without the use of seperate tools.

All egress or rescue windows from sleeping rooms shall have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 sq.ft. The minimum net clear opening height dimension shall be 24 inches. The minimum net clear opening width dimension shall be 20 inches. Where windows are provided as a means of egress or rescue, they shall have a finished sill of not more than 44 inches above the floor.

Check with your local Building Department for any special or additional requirements.
